What Is Dasha in Astrology? And Why It Affects Your Life So Much
One of the most powerful (and underrated) parts of Vedic astrology is the Dasha system. If you've ever wondered, "Why are things feeling stuck right now?" or "Why did everything suddenly change last year?" — chances are, your Dasha changed.
In my consultations, this is one of the first things I check. Because while your birth chart shows the blueprint of your life, the Dasha shows which part of that blueprint is active right now. It's the timing system that governs how and when different planets influence you.
Let me walk you through it — in simple terms.

What Is a Dasha?
Dasha (pronounced da-sha) means “period” or “phase.”
It’s a timeline system based on the position of your Moon at the time of birth. In Vedic astrology, we use the Vimshottari Dasha system, which breaks your life down into major periods ruled by different planets.
Each person’s Dasha sequence is unique, based on their Moon nakshatra (lunar constellation) at birth. The full Dasha cycle covers 120 years, divided among nine planets:
Sun – 6 years
Moon – 10 years
Mars – 7 years
Rahu – 18 years
Jupiter – 16 years
Saturn – 19 years
Mercury – 17 years
Ketu – 7 years
Venus – 20 years
Whichever planet’s period you’re born into becomes your first Dasha — and then the others follow in sequence.
Some people begin life in a Venus Dasha, and feel surrounded by relationships, affection, or art. Others might begin in a Saturn Dasha, and face early responsibilities or detachment. The sequence plays a key role in shaping your life’s timeline.
Why It Matters: The Planet Sets the Tone
The Dasha you’re in sets the energetic tone of your life during that time.
For example:
In a Venus Dasha, you may experience themes of relationships, beauty, creativity, or comfort.
In a Saturn Dasha, you might face responsibilities, delays, hard work, or maturity.
In a Rahu Dasha, expect unpredictable events, strong desires, or unconventional paths.
But it’s not just about the planet — it’s also about how that planet behaves in your chart.
If Saturn is strong and well-placed in your chart, its Dasha may bring career growth and inner discipline. If it’s weak or afflicted, it may feel like a grind — delays, detachment, or health issues.
That’s why two people in the same Saturn period can have completely different experiences.

The Sub-Periods (Bhuktis)
Each major Dasha is broken into sub-periods called Bhuktis. These are like mini-chapters within a larger phase. So you might be in:
Saturn–Mercury (Saturn major period, Mercury sub-period)
Each Bhukti adds its flavour to the main Dasha. The outer planet sets the overall theme, and the inner planet adds the nuance.
Saturn–Venus might bring emotional stability and mature partnerships.
Saturn–Mars might test your energy, health, or trigger conflicts.
Saturn–Rahu may bring confusion or karmic entanglements.
Bhuktis often explain sudden shifts — like things getting easier or harder unexpectedly.
In my readings, I always check:
Which Dasha-Bhukti you're in
What houses those planets rule in your chart
Where they are placed and what aspects they receive
This helps me understand your current life story and what’s likely to unfold next.

How It Shows Up in Real Life
Let me give you a few examples (without naming names):
One client was going through a Ketu Dasha. She kept saying she felt "blank," like nothing was exciting anymore. That's classic Ketu — detachment, withdrawal, introspection. When her Venus Dasha began, her energy shifted completely. She started dating again, picked up painting, and told me she "felt alive for the first time in years."
Another was in Rahu–Moon and felt completely overwhelmed — emotionally scattered, with big changes at home. We explored grounding practices and waited for the transition into Rahu–Mars, which turned out to be a productive (though intense) period for career building.
One person came in feeling anxious and irritable for no clear reason. She was in Mars–Ketu. Her chart showed that both planets were intense for her — Mars ruled her 8th house, and Ketu was placed in the 6th. We worked on pacing, patience, and not pushing too hard. As she moved into Mars–Venus, her mood shifted and she felt more supported.
How Is Dasha Different from Transits?
This is a question I get a lot.
Dasha is your personal timeline — it’s unique to you.
Transits are the current positions of planets in the sky, affecting everyone to some degree.
Think of it like this:
The Dasha sets the plotline of your story.
The Transits are the weather on a given day.
So if your Dasha is Venus, that’s your theme for a stretch of time (e.g., 20 years). But if Saturn is transiting your Moon right now, you might feel heavy or low emotionally during that Dasha.
When I analyse charts, I always consider both — what planetary period you’re in and what transits are triggering events.

How I Use Dashas in Consultations
Whenever someone books a consultation with me, I spend a good chunk of time understanding what Dasha they’re currently in — and what’s coming next.
I ask questions like:
Are you feeling a shift in mood, energy, or direction?
Are certain areas of life (love, work, health) suddenly in focus or facing friction?
Do you feel pulled towards something new, or stuck in old patterns?
Your answers, combined with the chart and Dasha insights, often give us a lot of clarity.
For example:
A Jupiter–Moon period might be a great time to invest in family, education, or emotional healing.
A Mars–Ketu period might be better suited for internal work and letting go, not launching something big.
Knowing this helps you plan better. It helps you trust the timing of your life.
Mini FAQ
What if my Dasha is about to change?
That's actually a powerful window. A Dasha transition often feels like a shift in priorities, energy, and focus. It can bring relief, or a new kind of challenge. I always recommend checking what planet is coming up — and preparing mentally for the shift.
Can a Dasha explain health issues or relationship blocks?
Absolutely. Some Dashas activate the 6th house (health, enemies, daily grind) or 8th house (hidden patterns, emotional upheaval). Similarly, Venus, Moon, or 7th-house Dashas often bring relationship themes to the forefront.
What if the Dasha planet is not strong in my chart?
We work with what’s there. Remedies, timing, and awareness help. Even a challenging planet teaches lessons and brings growth. The key is not to panic — but to understand and adapt.
Final Thoughts: You’re Not Imagining It
If life suddenly feels like a different season, you’re not imagining it. Chances are, your Dasha has shifted.
Understanding Dashas gives you perspective. You stop blaming yourself. You see that timing has a role. And you start to work with the energies, not against them.
I’d be happy to take a look at what’s active in your chart.
